800,000 People Flee Intense Conflict in Rafah, According to UN

Heavy Clashes and Bombardment in Rafah

Heavy clashes and bombardment rocked the southern Gaza city of Rafah, as the United Nations reported that 800,000 people had been forced to flee Israel’s assault on Hamas militants.

Israel’s Military Operations

  • Air strikes hit more than 70 targets across Gaza
  • Ground troops conducted “targeted raids” in eastern Rafah
  • 50 militants were killed and dozens of tunnel shafts were located

UN Refugee Agency’s Statement

Philippe Lazzarini of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees highlighted the massive movement of people since the start of Israel’s Rafah operation.

“800,000 people are on the road having been forced to flee since the Israeli forces started the military operation in the area on 6 May,” said Lazzarini.

Political Divisions and Calls for Action

Political divisions in Israel’s war cabinet emerged, with Minister Benny Gantz threatening to quit unless Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved a post-war plan for Gaza. Gantz called for six goals to be met, including establishing a multinational civilian administration for Gaza.

Hamas’s Response and Ongoing Conflict

Hamas’s armed wing, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, fired rockets towards Israel and targeted an Israeli command center in northern Gaza. Israel issued new evacuation orders for parts of northern Gaza due to rocket attacks.

Humanitarian Crisis and Aid Efforts

The Rafah incursion worsened the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, leading to aid entering via a temporary floating pier. However, UN agencies and aid groups emphasized the need for more efficient aid delivery to prevent a looming famine in Gaza.

Current Situation and International Concerns

The conflict, which began after Hamas’s attack on Israel, has resulted in a significant loss of life on both sides. The World Health Organization highlighted the lack of medical supplies in Gaza since the start of the Rafah operation.
