KYIV: Ukraine firmly rejected Pope Francis’ recent call for negotiations with Russia, asserting its determination to never surrender in the face of the ongoing invasion. The pontiff’s remarks sparked controversy in Kyiv, especially as Ukrainian officials reported three casualties from Russian shelling in the east on Sunday. A strike on a residential building in Myrnograd left a dozen more injured, underscoring the continued violence in the region.
In response to the Pope’s comments urging Ukraine to consider negotiations, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba emphasized the nation’s unwavering commitment to its flag, symbolizing resilience and independence. The yellow and blue flag represents the spirit by which Ukrainians live, die, and triumph, with Kuleba stating, “We shall never raise any other flags.”
The Pope’s suggestion of raising the white flag and engaging in dialogue with Russia was met with strong opposition in Kyiv, with Ukrainian officials drawing parallels to historical instances of collaboration between the Catholic Church and oppressive regimes.
