Beijing’s Stance on TikTok Ban Is Ironic

US Ambassador’s Critique of China’s Position on TikTok Ban

US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns criticized Beijing’s stance on the potential TikTok ban in the United States as “supremely ironic” in light of the Chinese government’s censorship of online platforms within its borders.

Background

The US House of Representatives recently approved a bill that would require the popular short-video app TikTok to sever ties with its Chinese parent company or face a nationwide ban. China has strongly condemned this decision, accusing the US of unjustly targeting foreign companies.

US Ambassador’s Response

Burns highlighted the irony of China’s criticism, noting that the Chinese government restricts many Western web platforms from operating in the country. He expressed disbelief at China’s position, emphasizing that while criticizing the US, China itself prohibits TikTok from reaching its vast population.

Online Seminar Remarks

During an online seminar organized by the East-West Center, Burns questioned the justification behind China’s stance on TikTok, particularly in the context of its strict control over online information and social media content.

Global Concerns

Several Western governments have raised concerns about TikTok’s ownership and its alleged ties to Beijing. Despite denials from TikTok, there are apprehensions about the app’s influence and data security.

Legislative Outlook

The bill passed by the US House of Representatives faces further scrutiny in the Senate. The White House has signaled President Joe Biden’s willingness to sign the bill into law if it advances to his desk.
