A North Korean ruling party delegation, led by alternate politburo member Kim Song Nam, has embarked on a diplomatic journey to China, Vietnam, and Laos. The delegation was warmly received in Beijing by a representative of the Chinese Communist Party, marking the beginning of their official visit.
China Visit
During their stay in China, the delegation met with Wang Huning, chairman of China’s top political consultative body. Beijing’s state news agency Xinhua reported that both parties discussed strengthening strategic communication and enhancing collaboration between the two nations.
Vietnam and Laos Visit
Following their visit to China, the delegation is scheduled to travel to Vietnam and Laos. The purpose of these visits has not been officially disclosed, but experts speculate that North Korea is engaging in diplomatic efforts after a period of Covid-19 border shutdowns.
North Korea’s Diplomatic Relations
North Korea, under the leadership of Kim Jong Un, has been actively working to strengthen ties with its allies. The country has designated 2024 as the “year of DPRK-China friendship,” emphasizing the importance of the relationship between the two nations.
Additionally, North Korea has historical ties with Laos and Vietnam, maintaining diplomatic connections with both countries. Notably, North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un previously held a summit with former US President Donald Trump in Hanoi in 2019.

In a gesture of goodwill, Kim Jong Un sent a flower basket to Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith to commemorate the founding anniversary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party.
