Israel’s Decision to Halt Aid to UNRWA in Gaza Criticized by UN Coordinator

Israel’s Ban on Aid Deliveries in Gaza Raises Famine Concerns

Israel’s recent ban on aid deliveries by the largest United Nations agency in Gaza is exacerbating an already dire situation, warned the interim UN coordinator in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The ban on aid shipments into northern Gaza by the UN agency for Palestine refugees, UNRWA, has led to catastrophic food shortages and growing hunger across the enclave.

Imminent Famine Threat in Gaza

The situation in Gaza is critical, with one in three children under age two in the north acutely malnourished and at least 23 deaths reported due to malnutrition. The UN Coordinator emphasized the urgent need to address the looming famine and malnutrition crisis in the region.

Impact of Aid Restrictions

Prior to the ban, around 700 trucks delivered goods into Gaza daily to meet the needs of its 2.3 million residents. However, currently, only a fraction of that aid is able to enter the region, exacerbating the food insecurity and malnutrition rates.

Challenges in Aid Delivery

Israel’s restrictions on aid entry points and limited scanning and inspection capacity are hindering the delivery of essential supplies. The UN Coordinator stressed the need for more aid corridors to be opened to meet the daily requirements of Gaza’s population.

Urgent Call for Action

With the current supply falling short of the growing needs, there is an urgent call for increased aid to Gaza. The UN Coordinator highlighted the critical importance of a ceasefire to facilitate the swift and efficient delivery of aid to those in need.

Humanitarian Crisis Unfolding

The dire conditions in Gaza, particularly in northern Gaza, are a clear indication of the urgent need for immediate action to address food insecurity and malnutrition. The ongoing political challenges are impeding the humanitarian response, risking further escalation of the crisis.

Call for Ceasefire

Ending hostilities and lifting restrictions on aid delivery are crucial steps to avert a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. The UN Coordinator emphasized the necessity of a ceasefire to ensure the timely and effective distribution of aid to the vulnerable population in Gaza.
