North Korea conducted a test of a medium-to-long-range solid-fuel hypersonic missile, emphasizing its “important military strategic value” according to state media reports. The test launch was directed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Development of a Powerful Weapon
During the test, a new type of intermediate-range solid-fueled ballistic missile named Hwasongpho-16B was launched in Pyongyang. Kim Jong Un stated that North Korea has developed “another powerful strategic offensive weapon” with capabilities of carrying various ranges of solid-fueled, warhead-controlled, and nuclear warhead-equipped missiles.
Key Details of the Test
The missile tested was a “new-type intermediate-range solid-fueled ballistic missile” equipped with a hypersonic glide warhead, as reported by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). Kim Jong Un personally inspected the missile before issuing the order for the launch, which traveled approximately 600 kilometers before landing in waters between South Korea and Japan.
