Taiwan Conducts Ceremony for Symbol Tilted by Earthquake

Demolition Ceremony of Uranus Building in Hualien, Taiwan

Fruit, flowers, and incense paper were carefully arranged on a table in preparation for a ceremony before the demolition of a dangerously leaning building in Hualien, Taiwan. The Uranus building, a 10-story structure comprising shops and apartments, has been a prominent landmark for nearly 40 years.

Symbol of Taiwan’s Recent Earthquake

Following the magnitude-7.4 earthquake that struck the region, the Uranus building tilted at a 45-degree angle, capturing global attention as a symbol of the disaster. Authorities decided to start the demolition process to ensure the safety of the surrounding area and honor the memory of those affected by the quake.

Ceremonial Offerings

As part of the demolition preparations, a table of offerings was set up in front of the building. The offerings, including chips, instant noodles, soda bottles, paper money for the deceased, flowers, and incense sticks, were intended to facilitate a smooth demolition process and pay respects to the lost souls.

Traditional cultural rites, such as offering prayers and blessings, were observed by local officials and representatives to seek a successful demolition and bring peace to the area.

Rescue Efforts and Recovery

Amid the demolition activities, rescue teams continued their search for missing individuals following the earthquake. Efforts to locate and free those trapped in mountainous areas, including the Tunnel of Nine Turns, were ongoing as the community rallied together to support those affected by the disaster.

Despite the challenges posed by landslides and road blockages, rescue operations utilizing helicopters, drones, and search teams with dogs were deployed to reach stranded individuals and provide assistance.
