Princess Diana’s Gowns Showcased in Hong Kong Before Auction

Princess Diana’s Fashion Legacy

During her 1989 trip to Hong Kong, Princess Diana wore a shoulder-padded, daffodil yellow suit accented with gleaming gold buttons, which is now part of a collection of six iconic outfits on display in the former British colony.

Exhibit Details

The collection includes dresses, shoes, and handbags that showcase some of the memorable fashion moments of the Princess of Wales. The exhibit, launched at a Hong Kong mall, will later move to Ireland before the items go up for auction on June 27.

Highlight Pieces

  • The yellow suit, designed by Catherine Walker, is estimated to fetch up to $50,000.
  • A midnight blue star-embellished tulle gown worn by Diana is expected to bring in $400,000 at the auction.
  • A showstopping number designed by Murray Arbeid, worn by Diana to the 1986 “Phantom of the Opera” premiere, is also part of the collection.

Martin Nolan, executive director of Julien’s Auctions, emphasized how Diana made a fashion statement every time she stepped out, capturing the hearts of many.

Visitor Reactions

Visitors at the exhibit reminisced about Diana’s charm and the impact she had during her visit to Hong Kong in 1989. An elderly shopper recalled the admiration Hong Kongers had for Diana, highlighting her charisma, caring nature, and dedication to charity.

Legacy and Continued Interest

The pieces on display, such as a Victor Edelstein-designed silk and lace evening dress, and a pink floral Catherine Walker dress, serve as tangible assets and conversation starters. Nolan noted that even years after her passing, Diana remains relatable and beloved by many.

Julien’s Auctions previously sold one of Diana’s evening dresses for a record-breaking $1.14 million, showing the enduring interest collectors have in her legacy. The younger generation, influenced by pop culture references like “The Crown,” also finds Diana’s style and story captivating.

Kathleen, a digital marketer in her 20s, highlighted how the exhibit intertwines fashion and history, offering a unique experience beyond just viewing photos.
