TV Host Willie Revillame Considers Senatorial Run
At least three TV hosts are believed to be chasing their senatorial dream come the mid-term elections next year. Of the three, confirmed as of January this year is Willie Revillame.
Willie’s Political Journey
The former “Wowowin” host made the announcement himself at the prayer rally on January 28 dubbed as Hakbang sa Maisug at the San Pedro Square in Davao City. Willie received the invite from former President Rodrigo Duterte, who introduced him to the crowd of Davaoeños.
Three years ago, Willie met with Senator Bong Go and former President Rodrigo Duterte to discuss his political plans. It was during this meeting that Duterte expressed his desire for Willie to run for senator.
Willie’s Decision and Challenges
Duterte believed in Willie’s charismatic appeal to the masses and saw him as a potential candidate. However, Willie expressed concerns about his busy schedule with his daily program on GMA. Despite considering the offer, Willie needed more time to think things over.
After much deliberation, Willie announced in February 2022 that he was considering former Senator Manny Villar’s offer to transfer to AllTV, bidding farewell to GMA where Wowowin had been home for close to eight years.
Challenges at AllTV
Transitioning to AllTV, a new industry player, Willie faced challenges as the network struggled to gain traction in the industry. This move also affected his public image and relationships with media practitioners.
Controversies and Reactions
Willie’s outspoken nature and on-air behavior have stirred controversies in showbiz circles. He has been known to reprimand his program staff publicly, causing rifts with some personalities in the industry.
Despite the controversies, Willie expressed his intention to run for senator, emphasizing his willingness to help others. However, not everyone in the industry, like showbiz writer Cristy Fermin, supports his political aspirations.
Current Status and Future Plans
Recent reports suggest that Willie has decided to forego his senatorial dream and focus on the return of his daily program Wowowin on TV5. The show is expected to air after Eat Bulaga in the third quarter of this year.
Given the timing and potential election ban, Willie’s decision to prioritize his TV show over a political run may be a strategic move for his career.
