Clearing Gaza’s Unexploded Ordnance Could Take Up to 14 Years

Gaza Reconstruction Efforts

UN demining experts estimate that the process of making Gaza safe from unexploded bombs could take up to 14 years. The aftermath of the war has resulted in approximately 37 million tonnes of debris scattered across the region.

Challenges in Debris Removal

The exact amount of unexploded ordnance in Gaza remains unknown due to the extensive destruction caused by the Israeli bombardment. Formerly bustling neighborhoods now lie in ruins, with every square meter containing around 200 kilograms of rubble.

Pehr Lodhammar, a senior officer from the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), highlighted the complexity of the situation, stating that at least 10% of the ammunition fired fails to function, requiring significant resources for cleanup.

He emphasized that with 100 trucks dedicated to the task, it would take approximately 14 years and 750,000 workdays to clear the debris effectively.

Humanitarian Concerns and Aid Efforts

Hostage Release Call

Leaders of 18 nations, including the United States, have called for the release of hostages taken during recent terror attacks in southern Israel led by Hamas. Israel estimates that over 130 hostages are still held in Gaza, following the deadly attacks that resulted in significant casualties.

Famine Threat and Aid Relief

UN officials have issued warnings about an imminent famine in the northern Gaza Strip, urging for increased aid relief to be allowed into the region. Despite some improvements in aid access promised by Israel, the volume and diversity of aid remain insufficient to avert a potential famine.

Carl Skau, WFP Deputy Executive Director, stressed the need for a significant increase in aid volume and diversity to prevent a humanitarian crisis in the area.

Humanitarian Aid Initiatives

Efforts are underway to establish a marine corridor for humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza, with calls for safe passage for a flotilla of boats carrying aid. The “Freedom Flotilla” aims to provide 5,500 tonnes of aid to Gaza, accompanied by international humanitarian observers.

Experts have urged Israel to adhere to international law and ensure unimpeded access for humanitarian aid, recalling past incidents where similar aid missions were intercepted and attacked.
