Tragedy Strikes: 20 Cambodian Soldiers Killed in Blast

Security Measures Tightened After Tragic Explosion

Security was on high alert around a military base in southwestern Cambodia following a devastating explosion that resulted in the loss of 20 soldiers, injuries to others, and significant damage to nearby residences.

Guarded Site and Restricted Access

Guards restricted access to the site located in Kompong Speu province, preventing media personnel from approaching the area.

Shocking News of the Blast

Hun Manet expressed deep shock upon learning about the explosion in Chbar Mon district of Kompong Speu province, as shared in a Facebook post on Saturday.

A villager living nearby recounted feeling tremors from the blast, describing it as an unprecedented loud explosion that caused significant disturbance.

Impact and Damage Assessment

Images from the scene depicted severe damage to buildings on the base, with roofs blown off and soldiers receiving medical attention in a hospital.

Several nearby houses also suffered damage, with roofs showing holes and structures impacted.

Official Report and Villagers’ Accounts

According to Col. Youeng Sokhon, four buildings were destroyed, military vehicles damaged, and 25 villagers’ homes affected by the explosion.

Witnesses reported hearing multiple blasts, with one villager, Sophal, highlighting the swift actions taken by the military to secure the area and ensure the safety of residents.

Causes and Precedents

While the exact cause of the explosion remains unclear, the incident raised concerns about the storage and handling of ammunition, particularly in times of extreme weather conditions such as the ongoing heat wave in the region.

Similar incidents in the past have underscored the risks associated with poorly stored munitions, as highlighted in a report by the Small Arms Survey.

Condolences and Support

Hun Manet extended condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and pledged government support for their funerals and compensation for the victims.

US Ambassador W. Patrick Murphy also expressed condolences to the affected families, emphasizing solidarity during this difficult time.
