China Conducts Military Drills Around Taiwan as ‘Punishment’

China Conducts Military Drills Around Taiwan

China initiated two days of military exercises around Taiwan as a response to what it perceives as “separatist acts.” The drills come shortly after Lai Ching-te assumed office as Taiwan’s new president.

Background

China considers Taiwan as part of its territory and views Lai as a “dangerous separatist” who could bring conflict and decline to the island. The relationship between China and Taiwan has been strained, with China insisting on eventual reunification and not ruling out the use of military force.

Military Exercise Details

The military drills, known as Joint Sword-2024A, focus on joint sea-air combat-readiness patrol, joint seizure of comprehensive battlefield control, and joint precision strikes on key targets. The exercises are being conducted in the Taiwan Strait and surrounding areas.

Scope of Drills

  • The drills involve joint sea-air combat-readiness patrol.
  • Comprehensive battlefield control is a key focus.
  • Precision strikes on key targets are part of the exercise.

Objectives

The exercises aim to test the joint combat capabilities of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army and serve as a warning against separatist activities and external interference.

Previous Exercises

Similar military exercises were last announced in August last year, focusing on seizing control of air and sea spaces. China has used such drills as a stern warning in response to perceived provocations.

Significance

The Taiwan Strait is a crucial maritime trade route, and Taiwan is a major producer of semiconductors, essential components in various technologies.
