US Sends $275 Million in Weapons and Military Aid to Ukraine

US Announces Military Aid for Ukraine

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United States has announced a new round of military aid for Ukraine in response to Russia’s ongoing assault on the northeastern Kharkiv region. The aid package includes ammunition, missiles, mines, and artillery rounds to support Ukraine’s defense efforts.

Background

Ukraine has been engaged in intense fighting in Kharkiv since May 10, when Russian troops made significant territorial advances. The United States, led by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, expressed solidarity with Ukraine’s defense against the Russian aggression.

US Support for Ukraine

Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the importance of the $275-million aid package, stating that it is a crucial part of the ongoing efforts to help Ukraine push back against Russia’s assault near Kharkiv. This assistance aims to provide urgently needed capabilities to the Ukrainian military.

Previous Aid and Ongoing Efforts

Previously, American lawmakers approved a $61-billion military aid deal for Ukraine after prolonged discussions in Congress. President Joe Biden has since authorized multiple tranches of military assistance to be sent to Ukraine. Blinken assured that the new aid would be swiftly delivered to support Ukrainian forces on the front lines.

Current Situation in Kharkiv

Recent strikes in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, resulted in the tragic loss of at least seven lives according to local authorities. The escalating conflict has led to the evacuation of over 11,000 individuals in the region, as Kharkiv Governor Oleg Synegubov reported.
