China Ceases Military Exercises Near Taiwan

China’s Military Exercises Around Taiwan

China recently concluded two days of military exercises around Taiwan, demonstrating its military capabilities and intentions towards the self-ruled island.

Simulation of Strikes and Isolation

The drills involved jets loaded with live munitions and warships practicing seizing and isolating Taiwan. Chinese military analysts stated that the exercises simulated strikes targeting Taiwan’s leaders, ports, and airports in an effort to “cut off the island’s ‘blood vessels’.”

Background of the Conflict

Beijing considers Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to bring the island under its control. Taiwan has been self-governed since 1949 when nationalists fled to the island following their defeat by the Chinese Communist Party in a civil war on the mainland.

Escalating Tensions

These military exercises are part of an escalating campaign of intimidation by China towards Taiwan. The drills are a response to Taiwan’s new leader Lai Ching-te’s inauguration speech, which China denounced as a “confession of independence.”

International Response

Taiwan’s presidency assured the public of having appropriate responses to ensure national security in the face of China’s provocations. The recent actions by China not only undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait but also challenge the international order.

Drills Highlights

A total of 111 Chinese aircraft and dozens of naval vessels participated in the exercises, showcasing China’s military strength. The drills focused on isolating Taiwan’s outlying islands and involved simulated precision strikes on key political and military targets.

Message to the World

China’s military exercises around Taiwan serve as a message to deter other countries from engaging with Taiwan and to negotiate with Taiwan from a position of strength. The drills demonstrate China’s ability to control the eastern area, which is considered a likely direction of external intervention by the PLA.
