Youth in Antigua Construct ‘Wall of Commitment’ to Combat Climate Crisis

Youth Action Summit at SIDS4 Conference

During the Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4), young people showcased their commitment to addressing climate change through a “wall of commitment” made from recyclable materials.

Global Children and Youth Action Summit

The SIDS Global Children and Youth Action Summit brought together 80 young delegates from the Caribbean, Pacific, and AIS regions for a 3-day event in Antigua and Barbuda. They engaged in brainstorming sessions and personal commitment writing activities.

Initiatives and Partnerships

The summit, organized by UNICEF and the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, focused on themes like resilient recovery, environmental integrity, and secure future. Partners such as UNFPA, Caribbean Development Bank, and governments of Malta and Australia supported the event.

Action Projects and Advocacy

Youth delegates participated in environmental awareness activities and advocacy training, culminating in the creation of the “wall of commitment.” They developed long-term action projects to address climate challenges in their regions.

Youth Voices and Future Sustainability

Youth delegates emphasized the importance of their voices in shaping a sustainable future. They highlighted the need for collective action and urged global cooperation to mitigate the impacts of climate change on vulnerable island nations.

Private Sector Engagement

UN Secretary-General highlighted the role of the private sector in supporting renewable energy, sustainable tourism, and climate resilience in small island states. He called for multistakeholder partnerships and financial support from private investors to achieve sustainable development goals.

Digital Transformation and Financial Reforms

The summit also discussed the need for digital connectivity, accessibility, and financial reforms to support the economic development of small island states. UN urged for a more just and responsive global financial system to address the challenges faced by developing economies.
