Indian Police Arrest Doctor and Hospital Owner After Tragic Fire Incident
Indian police announced on Monday the arrest of a doctor and the owner of an unlicensed hospital following a devastating fire that resulted in the deaths of six newborn babies. The incident occurred at the New Born Baby Care hospital in the Vivek Vihar area of New Delhi late on Saturday night.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The blaze, which broke out in a crowded ward lacking fire exits, was initially noticed by bystanders who courageously attempted to rescue the infants trapped inside.
Eye Witness Account
One parent, Vinod Sharma, who tragically lost his day-old baby boy in the fire, expressed his grief and blamed the hospital authorities for the heartbreaking loss. He mentioned that the doctor assured them the baby’s condition would improve, unaware of the impending tragedy.
Regulatory Violations
Authorities revealed that the hospital was operating without a valid license since March and had exceeded the approved bed capacity in the ward, leading to overcrowding and safety hazards.
Recovery Efforts
While five infants rescued from the fire are currently receiving treatment at another medical facility, investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Additional Fire Incident
Tragically, the hospital fire occurred shortly after a separate fire at an amusement park in Gujarat state, claiming the lives of 28 individuals. The fire was reportedly ignited by welding work, leading to a rapid spread due to highly flammable materials.
Legal Actions
Authorities have taken legal action against individuals responsible for the amusement park fire, charging them with culpable homicide. The intense heatwave in northern India during this time has further exacerbated the situation.
