US lawmakers back Taiwan against China’s ‘aggression’

US Lawmaker Stands with Taiwan Against Chinese “Aggression”

A senior United States lawmaker reaffirmed his country’s support for Taiwan against Chinese “aggression” during the first American congressional visit to the self-ruled island since the inauguration of a new leader.

Meeting with Taiwan’s Leader

Texas Rep. Michael McCaul, who heads the influential House Foreign Affairs Committee, expressed strong support for Taiwan during a meeting with leader Lai Ching-te. McCaul emphasized his solidarity with the island, denouncing China’s actions.

Chinese Military Drills

Following the swearing-in of Taiwan’s new leader, Chinese warships and fighter jets conducted drills around the island, claiming it as part of their territory. Beijing’s display of military power raised concerns about its intentions towards Taiwan.

US Congress Support

McCaul condemned China’s military exercises as intimidating and emphasized the importance of democracies standing together against aggression and tyranny. He highlighted the bipartisan support in the US Congress for Taiwan’s defense.

US-Taiwan Relations

Despite switching diplomatic recognition to China in 1979, the US remains a crucial ally and military supplier to Taiwan. President Joe Biden’s stance on Taiwan’s independence and the strategic ambiguity regarding intervention were reiterated during the visit.

Military Support for Taiwan

The US Congress allocated $8 billion in military support for Taiwan, drawing strong objections from Beijing. Efforts to expedite the delivery of military aid to Taiwan were discussed, emphasizing the importance of deterrence against Chinese aggression.
