China to Maintain Military Pressure on Taiwan

China’s Stance on Taiwan

China reiterated its commitment to applying military pressure on Taiwan in response to what it perceives as “independence” provocations from the self-ruled island.

Military Drills and Response

Recent military drills conducted by China around Taiwan involved warships and jets practicing maneuvers with live munitions aimed at seizing and isolating Taiwan. These exercises came shortly after Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te’s inauguration speech, which China criticized as a declaration of independence.

Beijing’s Position

Beijing views Taiwan as an integral part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to assert control over the island. The Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) stated that further military exercises could be conducted following the recent “Joint Sword-2024A” drills.

TAO’s Response

During a press conference, TAO spokeswoman Zhu Fenglian condemned what she described as ongoing “Taiwan independence” provocations. She warned that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) would continue to take actions to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity in response to such provocations.

Zhu characterized leader Lai’s rhetoric as “extremely reckless,” emphasizing the potential for heightened tensions in the Taiwan Strait and the negative impact on Taiwanese citizens. She emphasized China’s determination to counter and punish any actions perceived as threatening its interests.

“The greater the provocation, the stronger the countermeasure,” Zhu stated.

By maintaining a firm stance on Taiwan-related issues, China aims to safeguard its perceived national interests and territorial integrity.
