The noose of war tightens on civilians in El Fasher, warns UN official

Humanitarian Crisis in El Fasher, Sudan

The top UN aid official in Sudan has issued a stark warning about the worsening humanitarian situation in El Fasher, North Darfur. The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has put civilians at great risk.

Dire Humanitarian Situation

Civilians in El Fasher are facing attacks from all sides, with reports of casualties and human rights abuses. Medical facilities, displacement camps, and critical civilian infrastructure have been targeted, leaving many without access to basic necessities.

Appeal for Protection

The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, has appealed to all parties involved to avoid using explosive weapons in populated areas and to protect civilians and infrastructure. She emphasized the importance of respecting the rules of war.

Displacement and Food Insecurity

The conflict has displaced over seven million people within Sudan, with millions more fleeing to neighboring countries. The UN and its partners are working to address rising hunger and food insecurity, with millions of people in Sudan in need of assistance.

Child Malnutrition Crisis

Children and mothers are particularly vulnerable, with child malnutrition reaching emergency levels. Lack of access to nutritious food, safe water, and sanitation, compounded by the displacement of people, has led to a worsening crisis.

Risk of Conflict-Induced Famine

There is a growing risk of conflict-induced famine in Sudan, with catastrophic consequences for children and mothers. The agencies warn that immediate action is needed to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
