Among them were cousins Mariel Collarin and Heart Monterde from Hagdan Elementary School in Kinatarcan Island, Santa Fe, Cebu.
Barefoot Champions
Collarin and Monterde made a mark by clinching medals in multiple track events, including gold and bronze in the 800-meter run. What set them apart was their choice to compete barefoot, a decision based on comfort and familiarity.
Training Against the Odds
Coming from Kinatarcan Island, where conditions are challenging, the girls trained barefoot on barangay roads, showcasing their determination and resilience. Despite facing obstacles, they persevered and excelled at the provincial and regional levels.
The Journey to Success
Both girls, competing for the first time at such a level, showed remarkable progress and dedication. Their coach, Ronilo Oftana, recognized their hidden talents and encouraged them to pursue their athletic dreams.
Embracing Opportunities
After winning gold at the provincial meet, Collarin and Monterde trained rigorously for the CVIRAA, overcoming footwear challenges along the way. Their success not only brought joy to their school but also highlighted the talent and spirit of the island’s youth.
Road to Palarong Pambansa
With impressive performances at the regional meet, both girls aim to qualify for the Palarong Pambansa. Their journey, marked by perseverance and support, serves as an inspiration for young athletes from underprivileged backgrounds.
Celebrating Achievements
As they await confirmation for the national competition, Collarin and Monterde bask in the celebration of their accomplishments. Their determination and humility resonate with those who believe in the power of hard work and passion.
