Calvin Abueva Faces Suspension and Fine
Flashing the middle finger to a fan proved costly for Calvin Abueva. The PBA cracked the whip on the Magnolia forward after he got caught on camera flipping off a fan in their 87-77 loss to Barangay Ginebra in the Philippine Cup last March 31.
Suspension and Fine Imposed
Abueva will serve a one-game suspension and pay a fine of P20,000 as punishment for his latest misconduct, PBA commissioner Willie Marcial announced on Wednesday, April 3. Marcial emphasized that Abueva acknowledged his mistake and apologized for his actions.
Warning and Previous Incidents
This incident follows a previous fine of P100,000 imposed on Abueva for mocking the visual impairment of San Miguel head coach Jorge Gallent during the Commissioner’s Cup finals in February. PBA commissioner Marcial warned Abueva of a repeat ban if he does not change his behavior.
Future Actions and Consequences
Abueva explained that he retaliated after being verbally abused by the fan, but Marcial advised him to report such incidents to the officials for appropriate action. The PBA commissioner stressed that any future misconduct could lead to increased penalties or a ban for Abueva.
As a result of the suspension, Abueva will miss the upcoming game where Magnolia faces NLEX at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Saturday, April 6.
