Clashes reignite near Myanmar border town

Clashes between Myanmar Junta and Armed Ethnic Groups Near Thai Border

Clashes between the Myanmar junta and armed ethnic groups have erupted near a vital trade hub close to Thailand’s border, following a period of relative calm. The conflict in Myanmar escalated after the military seized power from Aung San Suu Kyi’s democratically elected government in February 2021.

Recent Developments

  • Fierce fighting broke out around the town of Myawaddy earlier this month, leading to the military’s withdrawal from the trade hub.
  • Despite a week of quiet, the situation reignited, with ongoing clashes reported near the 2nd Friendship Bridge.

Current Situation

According to reports, the anti-junta Karen National Union (KNU) is engaged in combat with the military in Myawaddy. The Thai army has confirmed clashes with a force targeting junta soldiers under the bridge.

The Thai task force deployed drones in the area and closed the bridge, a significant trade point for Myanmar. Local authorities have assisted approximately 2,000 people who crossed the border, ensuring their safety.

Response and Impact

Thailand’s Prime Minister is closely monitoring the situation and has pledged humanitarian assistance while emphasizing border protection. The military’s retreat from Myawaddy poses a challenge to the junta, affecting trade flow valued at over $1.1 billion.

A truck driver from Myawaddy mentioned hearing clashes outside the town, highlighting the tense situation in the region.
