Health Scare in Japan Linked to Dietary Supplements
Authorities in Japan are investigating a health scare related to dietary supplements designed to lower cholesterol, which has resulted in at least two deaths and over 100 hospitalizations. The supplements were recalled by Japanese drugmaker Kobayashi Pharmaceutical following reports of kidney complaints from consumers.
Recalled Supplement Brands
- “Beni Koji Choleste Help”
- Two other products containing red yeast rice (beni koji)
Red yeast rice is described in medical studies as an alternative to statins for reducing high cholesterol levels. However, there are warnings about potential organ damage depending on its chemical composition.
Kobayashi Pharmaceutical has not confirmed a direct link between the health issues and its products. The company has recalled the supplements and is cooperating with investigations.
Government Response
Top government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi confirmed two deaths and 106 hospitalizations potentially linked to the supplements. Health Minister Keizo Takemi has urged Kobayashi to provide information promptly, and local authorities are collecting data on health damage.
Concerns and Precautions
Red yeast rice, commonly used to lower cholesterol, can have side effects if it contains high levels of monacolin K. These side effects may include muscle, kidney, and liver damage. Consumers are advised to be cautious when using such products.
