United Nations Plea for Action on Gaza Deaths
The Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations (UN) urged the Security Council to condemn the recent tragic events in Gaza. Riyad Mansour emphasized the need for immediate action following the deaths of dozens of Palestinians in a chaotic situation where Israeli forces opened fire on civilians seeking food aid.
Call for Security Council Action
Mansour stressed the importance of the Security Council taking a stand, stating, “The Security Council should say enough is enough.” He highlighted the urgency of the situation and the need for condemnation of the violence that claimed the lives of 112 people and left 760 injured, according to the health ministry in Gaza.
Challenges Faced by Palestinians
The ambassador described the recent events as an “outrageous massacre” and criticized the Security Council’s inaction, attributing it to the loss of Palestinian lives. Mansour emphasized the impact of veto powers within the council, particularly noting the role of the United States as a key ally of Israel.
Appeal for Ceasefire
Mansour called for a ceasefire to prevent further tragedies, stating, “If the Security Council has the determination to end these massacres, what we need is a ceasefire.” He highlighted the importance of holding those responsible for the violence to account.
International Response
The Security Council convened a closed-door meeting to address the situation in northern Gaza following a request from Algeria. US Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Robert Wood, expressed deep concern over the loss of Palestinian lives, describing it as a “tragic day.”
These recent events have added to the already high Palestinian death toll, with the Gaza health ministry reporting over 30,000 casualties, including many women and children.
