Eleven Indonesians Rescued After Surviving Three Days at Sea

Indonesian Fishermen Survive Tragic Boat Capsizing

Eleven Indonesian fishermen managed to survive after spending three days at sea by clinging to their capsized boat. The incident occurred when a boat carrying at least 35 crew members capsized in the waters off the remote Selayar Islands in central South Sulawesi province. Tragically, two crew members lost their lives in the incident.

Survival Story

The survivors were found stranded on two separate atolls after floating in the sea for days. They had been adrift in the sea for three days before being carried by the current to the Selayar waters. Despite the challenging conditions, the survivors managed to stay afloat by wearing life jackets and securing themselves to the overturned boat.

Search and Rescue Efforts

The local search and rescue agency, along with the navy and volunteer teams, launched a search operation to locate the missing crew members. The joint team embarked on a mission that took five hours to reach the location where the survivors were found.

Challenges and Response

Authorities faced difficulties due to bad weather conditions, which hampered their rescue efforts. The survivors’ ordeal highlights the dangers faced by fishermen in Indonesia, where marine accidents are not uncommon.

Background

The fishing boat had departed from a North Jakarta port and was en route to Lombok Island in southern West Nusa Tenggara province. The vessel, carrying equipment such as fish traps, nets, and fishing rods, encountered trouble during Indonesia’s rainy season.

Marine Safety in Indonesia

Indonesia, an archipelago of about 17,000 islands, has seen numerous marine accidents attributed to lax safety standards. Incidents like this serve as a reminder of the risks faced by those working in the maritime industry in the region.
