Filipino Athletes Aim for Success in Paris Paralympics
More Filipino athletes are expected to join para swimmers Ernie Gawilan and Angel Otom, and para taekwondo jin Allain Ganapin in the Paris Paralympics roster.
Philippine Paralympic Committee’s Goal
After three Filipino para athletes secured their spots in the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, the Philippine Paralympic Committee (PPC) aims to have about seven more athletes qualify for the event.
Expansion of the Team
PPC head Mike Barredo is optimistic about surpassing the six-athlete roster sent to the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021. The committee is targeting additional qualifiers in para athletics, swimming, and potentially archery or para powerlifting.
Strength in Numbers
The Philippines anticipates a stronger performance with experienced athletes like Gawilan and Otom, who have achieved success in previous para games.
Motivation and Support
The enactment of Republic Act 10699 has provided more incentives for para athletes, encouraging them to excel in their respective sports. Athletes benefit from year-round allowances, foreign-based training, and participation in international competitions.
Preparation for Paris Paralympics
The Paralympic Games in Paris are scheduled to commence on August 28, shortly after the 2024 Olympics. Athletes are offered training opportunities in France and neighboring countries to adapt to the weather conditions.
Olympic Torch Relay
French and Greek embassies participated in the Olympic torch relay at the Mall of Asia complex, marking the 100-day countdown to the start of the Olympiad. The torch lighting in Olympia, Greece, symbolized the beginning of the journey.
Photo Exhibit
The French embassy launched a photo exhibit showcasing the achievements of Filipino and foreign Olympians and Paralympians, capturing the triumphs of these athletes.
