Firefighters Battle to Extinguish Fire at Copenhagen’s Historic Stock Exchange
Firefighters in Denmark have been working tirelessly to extinguish a fire that engulfed Copenhagen’s historic former stock exchange building. The fire broke out on Tuesday morning and continued into the following day, causing significant damage to the iconic structure.
Extent of Damage
Half of the 17th-century Borsen building has been destroyed by the fire, including its renowned 54-meter spire which collapsed during the blaze. The emergency services managed to bring the fire under control on Tuesday, but it persisted in the section of the building undergoing renovation.
Current Situation
As of Wednesday morning, firefighters are still working to extinguish the flames in the damaged area of the building, where only the exterior walls remain standing. Efforts are focused on stabilizing the structure and monitoring unaffected areas. It is anticipated that the firefighting operations will continue for at least another 24 hours.
Cause of the Fire
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigators have not yet been able to access the site. The building, a historic landmark in Copenhagen, houses a significant art collection and serves as the home of the Danish Chamber of Commerce. Originally constructed between 1619 and 1640, it served as the stock exchange until the 1970s.
