Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad Discharged from Hospital
Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, nearly 100 years old, was discharged from the hospital on Monday after a two-month stay for an infection.
Hospital Stay
The 98-year-old former prime minister, known as the world’s oldest serving leader, was admitted to the National Heart Institute on January 26.
Recovery at Home
An aide mentioned that Mahathir will be resting at home for a while following his discharge.
Gratitude to Well-Wishers
Photos shared by Mahathir’s office showed him reading newspapers and writing notes during his hospitalization. He expressed gratitude to Malaysians for their prayers and well wishes before the start of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
Political Career
Mahathir first served as the country’s prime minister from 1981 to 2003. He returned from retirement to lead a reformist coalition that ousted the government of Najib Razak in 2018. Despite losing his parliamentary seat in 2022, Mahathir remains active in politics and is a vocal critic of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Health Concerns
Throughout the years, Mahathir has faced various health issues, including heart problems. He has experienced multiple heart attacks and undergone bypass surgery. His recent hospitalization in January 2023 was one of several medical checkups he has had in the past.
