Western Visayas Regional Athletic Meet 2024
This year’s Western Visayas Regional Athletic (WVRAA) Meet opened at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City on Thursday, May 2. Co-hosted by the local governments of Negros Occidental and Bacolod, the six-day event gathered 2,976 student athletes to compete in various sports disciplines in preparation for the Palarong Pambansa in Cebu this June.
Participants
- Elementary graders up to senior high school students
- From the six provinces in Western Visayas: Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental
Challenges Faced
The WVRAA 2024 is confronted by numerous challenges in Bacolod, including:
- Rising temperatures
- Water scarcity
- Rotating blackouts
- Traffic jams
Dr. Ramir Uytico, director of the Department of Education (DepEd) in Western Visayas, emphasized the importance of safety for the players, with adjusted schedules to avoid extreme heat during certain periods of the day.
Event Details
Aside from Bacolod, some events will be hosted in nearby localities such as Murcia, Silay, and Talisay. San Carlos City will host the sepak takraw events for elementary and secondary participants.
The WVRAA 2024 opening ceremonies in Bacolod were marked by a traffic jam, but concluded with a vibrant field demonstration and a grand fireworks display.
Logistical Support
Efforts are being made to ensure a stable power supply at the sporting venues, despite the power crisis in Western Visayas. Water delivery to billeting areas is being managed by the Bureau of Fire Protection to address the shortage in tap water supply.
Security Measures
The safety of participants is a top priority, with officers deployed to various venues and billeting areas to ensure a secure environment for the duration of the event.
Security operations have been intensified in Bacolod City, particularly in areas hosting competitions and accommodating athletes.
