Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
Roughly 800,000 people have been forced to flee Rafah since Israel launched a military operation in the area on 6 May, according to the head of UN Palestine refugee agency UNRWA. Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini renewed the appeal for greater protection of civilians in Gaza, safe humanitarian access, and ultimately, a ceasefire.
Mass Displacement and Lack of Safe Zones
In a social media post, Lazzarini highlighted that nearly half of Rafah’s population is on the move, seeking refuge in areas like Gaza and Khan Younis. However, these areas lack safe water supplies and sanitation facilities, leaving people exposed and vulnerable.
Challenges in Providing Aid
The lack of safe passage and protection puts civilians at serious risk each time they are forced to flee. The situation is exacerbated by the absence of aid and basic humanitarian supplies, including food and essential items. Key crossings into Gaza remain closed or unsafe, hindering the distribution of crucial supplies.
Urgent Need for Ceasefire and Aid
Lazzarini emphasized the critical need for a ceasefire to prevent further harm to civilians. He called for the rapid and unimpeded passage of humanitarian relief and the re-opening of land routes for aid delivery. The displaced population in Gaza must have access to basic survival items and protection.
Call for Action
Humanitarian relief teams require safe access to provide assistance to those in need. It is essential for the parties involved to protect civilians and civilian objects, ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals in the conflict zone. Agreeing on a ceasefire is crucial to avoid further escalation and bring peace and stability to the region.
