UN Secretary-General’s Urgent Appeal for Peace in Gaza
With the situation in Rafah at a critical point, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has once again called on Israeli and Hamas leaders to show political courage and spare no effort in reaching an agreement to end the war in Gaza and release all hostages.
The Humanitarian Crisis in Rafah
More than a million Palestinians are currently residing in Rafah Governorate in southern Gaza amidst ongoing Israeli military operations. Approximately 100,000 people have already fled the area, seeking safety in the north.
A potential massive ground attack in Rafah could result in a catastrophic humanitarian disaster, jeopardizing ongoing efforts to provide support to the population, especially as the threat of famine looms large.
UN’s Ongoing Engagement
The UN is actively working with all parties involved to resume the delivery of life-saving aid into the enclave, including crucial supplies like fuel, through the Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossings.
Key medical facilities in Rafah are at risk of becoming inaccessible, including the only remaining operational dialysis department in Gaza. Additionally, humanitarian resources in the south, such as tents and food stocks, are running critically low.
Protection of Civilians and International Humanitarian Law
Emphasizing the importance of upholding international humanitarian law, Secretary-General Guterres stressed the need to protect civilians, especially vulnerable groups like pregnant women, children, the injured, the sick, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities who are unable to relocate from active conflict zones.
Concerns for the West Bank and International Community
Highlighting the interconnected nature of events in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, the Secretary-General expressed deep concern over escalating settler violence, excessive use of force by the Israeli Defense Force, demolitions, and evictions in the region.
He called for a unified international voice in support of an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, the unconditional release of hostages, and a significant increase in life-saving aid to the affected population.
Support for Displaced People in Kenya and Concern for Sudan
In addition to the crisis in Gaza, Secretary-General Guterres extended solidarity to the people of Kenya facing devastating floods and pledged continued UN support for relief efforts in the country.
He also expressed deep concern over the conflict in Sudan, where millions have been displaced and starvation threatens communities in Darfur. Urging all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law, he emphasized the need for full humanitarian access to affected regions.
Call for International Cooperation and Reform
Recognizing the limitations of military solutions in resolving conflicts, the Secretary-General called for urgent international cooperation to establish a political process aimed at restoring stability in Sudan.
He welcomed ongoing efforts by regional blocs and international organizations to address the crisis and urged reform of the international financial system to better address global challenges.
