Harvey Weinstein Hospitalized for Tests
Harvey Weinstein’s lawyer, Arthur Aidala, revealed that the former movie mogul has been hospitalized in New York City for a series of tests following the nullification of his 2020 rape conviction by an appeals court.
Medical Examination at Bellevue Hospital
Upon his return to New York City, Weinstein was transferred to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan from city jails for medical evaluation. Aidala expressed concern about Weinstein’s health, stating that he requires significant physical assistance and is undergoing various tests due to his deteriorating health condition.
A message left with the hospital regarding Weinstein’s condition was not immediately returned.
Current Custody Status
Frank Dwyer from the New York City Department of Correction confirmed that Weinstein is currently in custody at Bellevue Hospital. Thomas Mailey from the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision mentioned that Weinstein was transferred to the city’s Department of Correction following the appeals ruling, having previously been held at the Mohawk Correctional Facility.
Conviction Vacated and Retrial Ordered
The New York Court of Appeals recently overturned Weinstein’s conviction, citing that jurors were exposed to excessive evidence unrelated to the charges. Consequently, his 23-year prison sentence was voided, and a retrial was mandated.
Prosecutors plan to retry Weinstein on charges related to sexual assault incidents in 2006 and 2013.
Health Challenges and Legal Proceedings
Weinstein, who is also serving a prison sentence in Los Angeles for a separate rape case, has been battling various health issues such as cardiac problems, diabetes, sleep apnea, and eye conditions.
Aidala emphasized Weinstein’s physical ailments but noted that mentally he remains sharp. He criticized the treatment Weinstein received during his transfer, highlighting the lack of basic necessities provided to the 72-year-old.
Bellevue doctors are conducting extensive tests on Weinstein before considering his return to the Rikers Island jail complex. Aidala plans to discuss a retrial timeline with the court during Weinstein’s upcoming appearance in Manhattan.
