China’s Coast Guard to Increase Patrols Around Taiwan’s Kinmen Islands
China’s coast guard announced plans to enhance patrols around Taiwan’s Kinmen Islands following a series of recent fishing accidents that have led to tensions between the two sides.
Location and Background
The Kinmen islands, although administered by Taipei, are situated just 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the southeastern Chinese city of Xiamen.
Recent Incidents
In the past month, there have been multiple fatal fishing accidents in the area. One incident involved a Chinese fishing boat capsizing during a pursuit by Taiwan’s coast guard, resulting in two casualties. Another Chinese boat capsized in the region, leading to the death of two crew members.
Joint Rescue Operation
Following the recent incidents, a joint search-and-rescue mission was conducted by both Chinese and Taiwanese coast guard units to respond to the emergencies.
Future Patrol Plans
The Chinese coast guard stated its commitment to intensifying patrols around the Kinmen Islands to protect the rights, interests, safety, and property of Chinese fishermen, including those from Taiwan.
Cross-Strait Relations
The incidents have further strained relations between China and Taiwan, with differing accounts of the events leading to the fishing boat accidents. Taiwan maintains that its coast guard was acting within legal boundaries, while Beijing accuses Taiwan of evading responsibility and concealing the truth.
