Intensification of Syria Crisis Amid Gaza War

The Ongoing Conflict in Syria and the Wider Middle East Region

The war in Gaza continues to cast a dark shadow over the wider Middle East region, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation in Syria. Geir Pedersen, the UN Special Envoy for the country, called for a regional de-escalation, starting with an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Regional Spillover Effects and Concerns

Expressing deep concern over the ongoing conflict within Syria itself, Pedersen highlighted the lack of calm in any of Syria’s theaters, emphasizing unresolved conflicts and escalating violence that could lead to further hostilities.

Humanitarian and Economic Challenges

The humanitarian situation in Syria remains dire, with the need for greater access and generous donor support to alleviate the suffering of millions. The economic situation is equally troubling, with food prices doubling in the past year and the Syrian Pound witnessing a significant devaluation compared to the US Dollar since 2020.

Moreover, the unending suffering borne by Syrians has led to increasing gender-based violence and negative coping mechanisms, such as early marriage and forced prostitution among women.

Addressing Multifaceted Challenges

A new and comprehensive approach is needed to address the multifaceted challenges facing Syria. Pedersen remains committed to finding a path towards peace in the region.

Explosive Remnants of War and Health Risks

Ramesh Rajasingham, Director of Coordination at the UN humanitarian affairs office, emphasized the risks facing aid workers, including the impact of unexploded ordinance, landmines, and other weapons on civilians. The risks of deadly diseases, drought, heatwaves, cholera, and other health issues are expected to increase, especially for women and adolescent girls.

UN Rights Chief’s Briefing on Missing Persons in Syria

Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, briefed the General Assembly on the implementation of the resolution establishing the Independent Institution on Missing Persons in Syria. The Institution aims to clarify the fate and whereabouts of all missing individuals in Syria and provide support to victims, survivors, and family members.

Türk emphasized the importance of geographic accessibility and gender inclusivity for the Institution’s effectiveness, urging cooperation from all States and parties involved in the conflict to facilitate processes of search, identification, assistance, and support to victims.
