Islamic Cooperation Condemns Gaza ‘Genocide’, Calls for Sanctions on Israel

Organization of Islamic Cooperation Denounces Genocide in Gaza

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned the ongoing “genocide” in Gaza during its recent summit in Gambia. The resolution adopted at the summit called on the 57 member countries to take action against Israel for its role in the crisis.

Resolution Highlights

  • The OIC urged its members to impose sanctions on Israel, the occupying power, and to halt the export of weapons and ammunition used in Gaza.
  • Members were called upon to exert diplomatic, political, and legal pressure to stop the crimes of the Israeli colonial occupation and the genocidal war against the Palestinian people.
  • An immediate, permanent, and unconditional ceasefire was demanded.

The OIC, established in 1969 to promote Muslim solidarity and support the Palestinian cause, has been actively working to defend Muslim holy sites and address the ongoing conflict in the region.

Recent Developments

In November 2023, the OIC, along with the Arab League, condemned Israeli actions in Gaza but refrained from implementing punitive measures. However, in December 2023, the OIC supported South Africa’s legal action against Israel at the International Criminal Court, accusing it of genocide against Palestinians.

The 15th OIC summit, held in Cairo, focused on efforts to negotiate a truce and secure the release of hostages in Gaza. Despite the discussions, concrete progress was not achieved during the meeting.

Notably, the summit saw limited physical attendance by African leaders, with most member countries sending representatives to the event.

Conflict Details

The conflict in Gaza escalated following an attack by Hamas on Israel, resulting in significant casualties on both sides. The retaliatory offensive by Israel has led to a high number of casualties, with civilians, including women and children, bearing the brunt of the violence.
