Israel Continues Military Offensive in Gaza Strip
Despite an order from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to “immediately halt” its military offensive in Rafah, Israel bombed the Gaza Strip, including the southernmost city of Rafah, on Saturday.
ICJ Orders Israel to Halt Offensive
In a case brought by South Africa alleging genocide, the ICJ ordered Israel to stop its Rafah offensive and release hostages held by Palestinian militants. The court’s orders included keeping the Rafah crossing open between Egypt and Gaza.
Israel’s Response
Israel, however, showed no signs of changing its course in Rafah, with National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi stating that Israel will not create conditions leading to the destruction of the Palestinian civilian population.
Hamas’ Reaction
Hamas welcomed the ICJ ruling on Rafah but criticized the exclusion of the rest of the Palestinian territory from the order.
Continued Conflict
Despite the ICJ ruling, Israel carried out strikes on Gaza, leading to ongoing fighting between the army and Hamas. Palestinian witnesses reported Israeli strikes in Rafah and Deir al-Balah.
ICJ Ruling Details
The ICJ ordered Israel to halt its military offensive in Rafah, allow UN investigators access to Gaza, open the Rafah crossing for humanitarian aid, and release hostages held by Hamas.
International Pressure on Israel
Israel faced mounting international pressure following the Gaza conflict, with diplomatic efforts underway to secure a ceasefire and calls for accountability for war crimes.
