Israel Strikes Gaza Following Rafah Evacuation Directive

Israeli Strikes Escalate in Gaza

Israeli forces launched new strikes on Gaza, expanding an evacuation order for Rafah. The United Nations has warned of a potential “epic” disaster if a full invasion of the densely populated southern city occurs.

Escalation of Violence

Gaza’s civil defense agency reported the deaths of two doctors in Deir al-Balah, with intense clashes and heavy gunfire near Gaza City. Israel conducted strikes near the Rafah crossing with Egypt, as seen in AFP images showing smoke rising over the city.

Evacuation and Displacement

Israel expanded the evacuation order for eastern Rafah, prompting around 300,000 residents to flee the city. Displaced Palestinians faced uncertainty and lack of safe havens, with many expressing concerns about overcrowding and safety.

  • Residents were urged to move to the “humanitarian zone” of Al-Mawasi on the coast northwest of Rafah.
  • Hamas accused Israel of widening the incursion into Rafah, leading to increased tensions.

International Concerns

International entities, including the United Nations and the European Union, expressed alarm at the situation in Rafah. The EU chief criticized the relocation of civilians to unsafe areas, while Doctors Without Borders highlighted challenges in providing medical assistance due to ongoing military operations.

Truce Efforts and Hostage Situation

Efforts to negotiate a truce and secure the release of hostages faced obstacles. Hamas reported the death of a hostage due to injuries sustained in an Israeli strike, further complicating the situation.

  • US President Joe Biden called for a ceasefire, linking it to the release of hostages by Hamas.
  • The US State Department raised concerns about potential violations of international law by Israel but did not halt weapon shipments.

Humanitarian Crisis and Response

The closure of the Rafah crossing by Israel has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, according to Hamas. Aid agencies highlighted the challenges of delivering assistance in the militarized area, despite some crossings being reopened by the Israeli army.
