Mass Exodus from Rafah
Amid ongoing Israeli bombardment in and around Gaza’s southernmost city, around 80,000 people have fled Rafah since Monday. Most of those displaced by Israeli military evacuation orders in eastern Rafah had already been uprooted from other areas of Gaza. They are now leaving with whatever they can carry, using vehicles, trucks, motorbikes, and donkey carts, as reported by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).
Shelter Situation
More than 47,500 individuals left their shelters in Rafah on Wednesday alone, with some families seeking refuge at UNRWA shelters in Tel Sultan and Al Mawasi in the west.
Humanitarian Aid Challenges
In a concerning development, the World Food Programme’s main warehouse is now inaccessible, and no aid has entered from southern crossings for two days. With limited operational bakeries and dwindling food supplies lasting only one to three days, the situation remains critical.
Ongoing Bombardment
UNRWA reported a significant amount of bombardment in eastern Rafah early Thursday and throughout the night, highlighting the continuous hostilities in the region.
Challenges in Aid Delivery
Despite reports of the Kerem Shalom crossing reopening, aid delivery to vulnerable populations in Gaza remains a challenge. Efforts are underway to resume the entry of goods, including fuel, to manage incoming supplies effectively.
Northern Gaza Aid Delays
OCHA reported obstacles to humanitarian missions in northern Gaza by Israeli authorities, impacting aid operations. Efforts are ongoing to scale up aid operations in the region.
Urgent Fuel Needs
UNICEF Chief Catherine Russell emphasized the urgent need for fuel to transport life-saving supplies and staff to reach children and families in need. The limited essential infrastructure in Gaza relies on fuel for critical services, and the situation is becoming increasingly dire.
West Bank Violence
OHCHR warned of escalating violations against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) intensifying actions in the region. The situation in the West Bank has worsened, adding to the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
