Japanese Town Blocks View of Mt. Fuji

Mount Fuji Tourism Concerns in Fujikawaguchiko, Japan

A town in central Japan, Fujikawaguchiko, has taken measures to address the increasing issues caused by the growing number of tourists visiting the popular viewing spot for Mount Fuji. Residents have expressed frustration over the behavior of many visitors, particularly foreign tourists, who engage in littering, trespassing, and violating traffic rules in their quest for the perfect photo to share on social media.

Installation of Mesh Barrier

Concerned about the safety and well-being of both tourists and residents, workers in Fujikawaguchiko have installed a large mesh barrier at the viewing spot. The black net, measuring 2.5×20 meters, aims to discourage dangerous activities and maintain order in the area.

Challenges Faced by Residents

Residents like Michie Motomochi, who runs a traditional Japanese sweet shop, have voiced their concerns about the disruptive behavior of tourists. They have witnessed visitors parking illegally, ignoring smoking bans, and overcrowding pavements to capture photos of the iconic snow-capped Mount Fuji.

Response from Tourists

While some tourists, like Christina Roys from New Zealand, express disappointment at the barrier hindering their view, they also acknowledge the necessity of such measures to ensure safety and preserve the beauty of the area. Roys highlights the importance of finding alternative spots to admire Mount Fuji without endangering themselves or others.

Tourism Trends in Japan

Japan has seen a significant increase in overseas tourists, with monthly visitor numbers surpassing 3 million. However, this influx has raised concerns similar to those experienced in other popular tourist destinations worldwide. Issues of overcrowding, environmental impact, and cultural preservation have prompted authorities to implement new regulations and entry fees in certain areas.

Mount Fuji Hiking and Safety

As the July-September hiking season approaches, authorities are taking steps to manage the increasing number of hikers on Mount Fuji. Safety and environmental concerns have been raised due to overcrowding on the iconic volcano. Initiatives such as online booking systems and entry fees aim to regulate visitor numbers and protect the natural beauty of the region.

Impact on Local Communities

Residents living near popular photo spots, such as the Fuji Dream Bridge, have also expressed concerns about overtourism. Efforts are being made to redirect tourists to less crowded areas while still providing them with stunning views of Mount Fuji. Tour operators are exploring alternative locations to minimize the impact on local residents.
