Exploring Medical Scholarship Opportunities in the Philippines
As a nursing student with aspirations to pursue a career in medicine, you may be eligible for government scholarship programs that can help you achieve your academic goals without the burden of high tuition fees.
Republic Act (RA) 11509: Doktor Para sa Bayan Act
RA 11509, also known as the Doktor Para sa Bayan Act, outlines the qualifications and requirements for the Medical Scholarship and Return Service Program (MSRS). This program aims to support deserving students in pursuing a Doctor of Medicine degree in state universities and colleges (SUCs) or partner private higher education institutions (PHEIs) in regions without SUCs offering medical courses.
Qualification Requirements
- Must be a Filipino citizen residing in the Philippines
- Graduating student or graduate of an appropriate undergraduate program for a Doctor of Medicine degree
- Passed entrance examination and other admission requirements for a Doctor of Medicine degree
- Obtained a National Medical Admission Tests (NMAT) score mandated by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED)
Disqualifications
It’s important to note the disqualifications under RA 11509, which include:
- Accepting another scholarship while benefiting from the MSRS
- Failing to meet academic requirements or complete the course within the prescribed period
- Failing the Physician Licensure Examination within five years
- Committing gross misconduct that could harm the educational institution or community
Individuals who do not meet the qualifications or fall under disqualifications may be required to repay the full cost of the scholarship and related benefits.
By promoting social justice and expanding access to quality education, the government aims to provide opportunities for underprivileged individuals to pursue a career in medicine through programs like the MSRS.
