Midwives Delivering Peace Amidst Conflict

The Vital Role of Midwives in Global Healthcare

Millions of lives each year rely on the expertise and care of midwives. However, a global shortage is currently putting immense pressure on this profession, as highlighted by the UN sexual and reproductive health agency UNFPA on the International Day of the Midwife.

Midwives in the Face of the Climate Crisis

This year, the spotlight is on the crucial role of midwives during the ongoing climate crisis. Every two minutes, a woman or girl dies due to pregnancy-related complications, a figure that climate change threatens to exacerbate, underscoring the significant role midwives play in mitigating these risks.

The Impact of Midwives in Crisis Situations

When crisis strikes, midwives are often the first on the scene, especially in remote communities. They provide essential care regardless of the circumstances, ensuring that babies arrive safely even in challenging situations such as conflict or natural disasters.

Midwives as Healthcare Providers

Besides attending births, midwives also deliver up to 90 percent of other sexual and reproductive health services, showcasing their diverse and critical role in healthcare.

The Role of Midwives in Times of War

Amid increasing conflicts worldwide, the importance of midwives as essential healthcare providers has become more prominent. Their role extends beyond assisting in childbirth to providing crucial psychological support to women and children facing distressing situations.

Addressing the Midwife Shortage

There is a severe shortage of around a million midwives globally, with challenging working conditions, gender discrimination, and low wages deterring many from entering the profession. Closing this deficit in midwife numbers could prevent two-thirds of maternal and newborn deaths, saving over 4.3 million lives annually by 2035.

UNFPA’s Efforts in Midwife Education and Training

UNFPA has been actively involved in educating and training midwives to international standards, with over 350,000 midwives already benefiting from this initiative. By improving the quality of care provided by midwives, UNFPA aims to enhance maternal and newborn healthcare globally.
