Myanmar military celebrates army day amidst ongoing turmoil

Myanmar’s Annual Armed Forces Day Parade

Myanmar’s military government showcased its strength during the annual Armed Forces Day parade, amidst a growing armed resistance challenging its authority.

Struggles and Challenges

The military has faced significant setbacks against an alliance of ethnic minority armed groups, leading to concerns about holding elections due to the country’s instability.

The Junta’s Existential Threat

Three years after seizing power in a coup, the junta is now facing what a United Nations expert describes as an “existential threat,” with casualties and defections impacting its control.

Show of Force

Despite the challenges, the military displayed defiance during the Armed Forces Day parade, commemorating the resistance to Japanese occupation during World War 2.

Tight Security and International Support

Security was heightened in Naypyitaw, the capital, with minimal civilian presence. The junta’s leader attended a gala dinner with Russian officers, highlighting Moscow’s support for the regime.

Escalating Conflict

The coup in 2021 triggered turmoil, resulting in thousands of deaths and economic devastation. Anti-junta forces, including the People’s Defense Forces, have engaged in battles across the country, posing a significant challenge to the military’s control.

Enforcing Military Service

Facing recruitment challenges, the junta implemented a military service law, compelling young adults to serve for two years. This move led to a surge in visa applications from potential recruits seeking to leave the country.

Continued Strife and Repression

Despite promises of new elections, the military has extended a state of emergency, maintaining a crackdown on dissent that has resulted in thousands of casualties and arrests since the coup.
