Ongoing Conflict in Sudan Stalls Progress on Abyei Region
The ongoing conflict between rival militaries in Sudan has stalled progress towards the determination of the final status of the disputed oil-rich Abyei region which straddles the Sudan-South Sudan border, as reported by the head of UN peacekeeping operations.
UN Support Amidst Challenges
Despite the challenges, the UN remains prepared to support both parties, in close collaboration with the African Union, once they resume political negotiations. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, briefing ambassadors at the Security Council, emphasized the importance of UN support in the region.
Intercommunal Tensions and Humanitarian Challenges
The conflict in Sudan has exacerbated intercommunal tensions in Abyei, leading to recent clashes over cattle rustling and multiple fatalities among the Misseriya and Nuer communities. UNISFA held a meeting with representatives to support peaceful conflict resolution amidst escalating tensions.
Humanitarian conditions in Abyei are deteriorating, with a scarcity of essential services and goods, worsened by an influx of people fleeing conflict in Sudan. Despite the challenges, UN agencies and partners are committed to providing necessary aid.
Fallout from Sudan Crisis and Economic Impact on South Sudan
Hanna Tetteh, the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Horn of Africa, highlighted the political, economic, and humanitarian fallout of the crisis in Sudan, particularly affecting South Sudan. The influx of refugees and returnees from Sudan has strained resources and access to basic services in South Sudan.
Due to the conflict, South Sudan’s oil production and exportation have been suspended, impacting its economy. The disruption of oil delivery and uncertain security situation have worsened the economic woes in South Sudan.
