Over 2,100 Arrested in Pro-Palestinian Protests at US College Campuses

Recent Pro-Palestinian Protests at US College Campuses

Police have arrested over 2,100 individuals during pro-Palestinian demonstrations at various college campuses in the United States. The protests have involved the use of riot gear, tactical vehicles, and flash-bang devices to disperse tent encampments and occupied buildings.

Incident at Columbia University

During the clearing of protesters from Hamilton Hall at Columbia University, an officer accidentally discharged his gun while attempting to use the attached flashlight. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the round struck a wall frame. Body camera footage captured the incident, and an investigation by the district attorney’s office is underway.

Arrests and Crackdowns

More than 100 individuals were detained during the Columbia crackdown, part of a larger wave of arrests related to campus protests concerning the Israel-Hamas conflict. The Associated Press documented at least 50 arrest incidents at 40 different colleges and universities since April 18.

At the University of California, Los Angeles, police detained over 200 protesters who defied orders to disperse. Officers used flash-bangs to break up the crowd and dismantled barricades and encampments set up by the demonstrators.

Student Movement and Reactions

Protests calling for universities to cease business ties with Israel or companies supporting the Gaza conflict have emerged at campuses nationwide. These demonstrations have drawn international attention, with coverage by media outlets like Iranian state television and Qatar’s Al Jazeera.

While Israel has labeled the protests as antisemitic, organizers argue that they are peaceful movements advocating for Palestinian rights and protesting the ongoing war. President Joe Biden has supported the right to peaceful protest but condemned recent disorder.

Background and Context

The protests began at Columbia University on April 17, with students demanding an end to the Israel-Hamas conflict. The violence in Gaza has resulted in significant casualties, with thousands of Palestinians and civilians affected by the hostilities.
