Peruvian President implicated in Rolexgate bribery scandal

Peru President Accused of Accepting Bribes

Peru’s attorney general has accused President Dina Boluarte of accepting bribes in the form of Rolex watches, adding a new dimension to the corruption scandal that has engulfed her government.

Allegations of Bribery

Attorney General Juan Carlos Villena stated that the luxury items received by Boluarte from a regional governor were tantamount to accepting bribes, leading to a constitutional complaint against her for suspected passive corruption.

The Rolex Watch Scandal

The scandal came to light in March when a collection of undeclared luxury Rolex watches and jewelry was discovered in the president’s possession. Boluarte claimed that the watches were loaned to her by a friend, the regional governor of Ayacucho, Wilfredo Oscorima.

Response and Criticism

Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen criticized the accusation, labeling it as a form of persecution against Boluarte. The president, who faces an approval rating of only 12 percent, is now under investigation for alleged bribery and improper benefits from public officials.

Political Instability in Peru

Peru has a history of political instability, with six presidents in the past eight years. Boluarte assumed office in December 2022 after the impeachment of left-wing president Pedro Castillo. She now awaits a decision from the courts regarding a potential trial after her term ends in July 2026.

Previous Allegations

In addition to the bribery scandal, Boluarte is also facing accusations of “genocide, homicide, and serious injuries” related to a crackdown on protesters in 2023 demanding her resignation and fresh elections.
