Putin orders nuclear drills near Ukraine

Russia Orders New Nuclear Drills Amid Ukraine Tensions

President Vladimir Putin has ordered new nuclear weapons drills in response to perceived Western threats. This move comes as a Ukrainian drone attack resulted in casualties in Russia’s Belgorod border region.

Putin’s Directive

Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that the upcoming drills will involve the air force, navy, and troops stationed near Ukraine. Putin has recently heightened his nuclear rhetoric, emphasizing the risk of nuclear war in a national address earlier this year.

Reasons Behind the Drills

The Kremlin stated that the drills are a response to Western discussions about deploying troops to Ukraine. The exercises aim to safeguard Russian territorial integrity against perceived threats from certain Western officials.

Focus on Nonstrategic Nuclear Weapons

During the drills, there will be a focus on practicing the preparation and use of nonstrategic nuclear weapons, also known as tactical nuclear weapons. These weapons are designed for battlefield use and can be delivered via missiles.

Participation and Concerns

Troops from the Southern Military District, bordering Ukraine, will participate in the drills. Western officials have expressed growing concerns over Russia’s nuclear rhetoric and military activities.

Deadly Belgorod Attack

Belgorod recently experienced a deadly attack, with Ukrainian kamikaze-drones targeting vehicles near the village of Berezyovka. The incident resulted in six fatalities and 35 injuries, including children. The region has faced a series of drone and missile attacks, causing significant damage and casualties.

Impact on Energy Facilities

Simultaneously, Russian strikes targeted energy facilities in Sumy and Kharkiv regions in Ukraine, leaving thousands without power. The attacks have disrupted daily life in these areas, with schools and homes affected by the power cuts.
