Rafah under attack as Biden cautions Israel

Israel’s Offensive in Rafah

Israel shelled Rafah on Thursday despite warnings from United States President Joe Biden regarding its war against Hamas. The threat of cutting off weapons transfers looms if Israel proceeds with its offensive into the Gaza Strip’s southernmost city.

Defiance of International Objections

Israel has defied international objections by sending in tanks and conducting targeted raids in Rafah, claiming it as home to Hamas’ last remaining battalions. However, the city is also densely populated with displaced Palestinian civilians.

US Response and Warning

President Biden, in an interview with CNN, warned that US weapons supplies to Israel would be halted if the Rafah ground offensive continues. This warning came after Israel seized Rafah’s border crossing into Egypt, a crucial entry point for aid into Gaza.

Israeli Reaction

Israel labeled Biden’s threat as “very disappointing” and expressed dismay at the potential disruption of weapon supplies. The Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations called it a challenging statement from a longstanding ally.

Humanitarian Crisis in Rafah

The heavy shelling in Rafah has led to a dire humanitarian situation. Civilian life has come to a standstill, with residents living in extreme fear and anxiety. The interruption of humanitarian deliveries has worsened the health crisis in the region.

Healthcare Challenges

Hospitals in southern Gaza are facing a critical fuel shortage, with only three days of fuel left due to border closures. The World Health Organization warns that without fuel, all humanitarian operations in the region will come to a halt.

Escalation of Conflict

The conflict in Gaza, triggered by Hamas’ attack on Israel, has resulted in a significant loss of life on both sides. The ongoing military offensive has led to a high number of casualties, including civilians, escalating tensions in the region.
