Returning Children to School in Gang-Stricken Haiti

Children in Haiti Facing Educational Crisis Amid Violence and Insecurity

Against the backdrop of a humanitarian crisis and gang violence in Haiti, UN agencies are warning that children are suffering not just from a lack of schooling but also through witnessing violence.

Impact of Violence on Education

Students in the capital Port-au-Prince have missed hundreds of hours of class time over the past year. More than one million Haitians are facing emergency levels of acute food insecurity, according to a new UN-backed report.

Massive School Closures

By the end of January, a total of 900 schools had temporarily closed mainly in Port-au-Prince, depriving around 200,000 children of their right to education. Many other schools abruptly shut in late February due to armed gang activities.

Challenges Faced by Children

Gangs reportedly now control a significant portion of the capital, leading to cases of armed groups recruiting children, escalating violence, looting, and destruction. The situation has transformed spaces for children into battlegrounds.

Urgent Need for Security

Basic security is urgently needed to ensure the safety of children and aid workers. Protection of schools, hospitals, and critical infrastructure is crucial to safeguard children’s access to education and humanitarian services.

Displacement and Trauma

Violence has displaced at least 362,000 people, with many seeking shelter in public buildings, including schools. Children are facing terror and trauma, with some witnessing horrific incidents on the streets.

Efforts to Address the Crisis

UN agencies are working together to provide essential support to those in need and to reintegrate children into formal education. Initiatives include psychosocial support, school meal programs, and alternative learning environments.

Redefining Education in Crisis

Efforts are underway to get children back to learning through innovative approaches such as distance learning via radio, television, and e-learning platforms. Collaboration with the Ministry of Education is key to ensuring continued access to education during these challenging times.
