Schools in India Close Due to Rising Temperatures

Delhi Orders Early School Closure

Authorities in India’s capital have taken the decision to close schools early for the summer holiday in response to soaring temperatures. Delhi experienced a scorching heat wave with temperatures reaching 47.4 degrees Celsius (117 degrees Fahrenheit), prompting immediate action.

Heat Wave Impact

The decision to close schools was made urgently due to the extreme heat conditions prevailing in Delhi. The government order, as reported by the Hindustan Times, instructed schools to shut down with immediate effect, shortening the academic term by a few days.

Severe Weather Warning

India’s weather bureau issued a warning of “severe heat wave conditions” for the week, with Delhi recording the highest temperature nationwide at 47.4 degrees Celsius in the Najafgarh suburb. This led to authorities in other states like Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan also ordering school closures to ensure the safety of students.

Climate Change Impact

While India is accustomed to high summer temperatures, the effects of climate change are making heat waves longer, more frequent, and more intense. Scientific research has highlighted the increasing severity of heat waves, posing risks to public health, particularly for vulnerable groups like infants, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses.

Political and Environmental Impact

The heat wave coincides with the ongoing election in India, with concerns arising over the potential impact of hot weather on voter turnout. Analysts have noted a decrease in voter participation, attributing it partly to the unusually high temperatures and the anticipation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reelection. The election commission has established a task force to assess the effects of heat waves and humidity on voting days.

Extreme Weather Events

While Delhi grapples with intense heat, southern states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala have been facing heavy rainfall. Recent severe storms have caused significant damage, including in Mumbai, where a billboard collapse resulted in casualties. These extreme weather events underscore the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of changing climate patterns.
