Shawn Umali Transfers to St. Benilde Blazers
Bruising big man Shawn Umali has decided to part ways with the Lyceum Pirates and will now be suiting up for the St. Benilde Blazers starting in NCAA Season 101.
Umali’s Performance in NCAA Season 99
Umali emerged as a dominant player in NCAA Season 99, showcasing impressive stats including averaging 11 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.6 blocks, and 1 steal during the elimination round. His contributions helped the Pirates secure a spot in the Final Four as the second seed, although they were eventually defeated by San Beda in the championship.
Umali’s Future with the Blazers
With two more seasons ahead of him starting in NCAA Season 101, Umali aims to fill the gap left by former NCAA MVP Will Gozum in the St. Benilde lineup. The Blazers also bid farewell to Migs Oczon, who moved to the Korean Basketball League.
Head coach Charles Tiu expressed his excitement about Umali joining the team, highlighting the player’s talent and the appeal of a La Salle education as key factors in his decision.
Umali had received offers from various schools, including Emilio Aguinaldo College, Letran, San Beda, and UAAP institutions, before ultimately choosing St. Benilde. He expressed gratitude to Lyceum for the support and opportunities he received during his time with the Pirates.
Umali’s departure marks the end of a chapter with Lyceum, where he learned the values of teamwork, perseverance, and resilience that have shaped his playing career and personal life.
